Frozen's Idina Menzel plays the Sony Centre on Friday night. HANDOUT

Idina Menzel learned to 'let it go'a long time ago. You'd think as the voice of Elsa in Disney's animated juggernaut Frozen might have major cred with her seven-year-old son Walker - whose dad is Menzel's ex, Taye Diggs - but he wasn't impressed with his Tonywinning mom's most famous film credit. But he'll soon have a lot more to be proud of: Along with the Wicked/Rent alum just completing a reading of Alanis Morissette's new musical Jagged Little Pill, she's also set to voice the Frozen sequel - and she plans on wedding [fiancé Aaron Lohr] "eventually." 24 Hours spoke with the 46-year-old Queens, N.Y. native leading up to her Friday night show at Toronto's Sony Centre.

As a mother, it's harder now 'cause I bring my son along with me to most places, unless he's with his dad. I'll be honest, it's not some glamorous thing! Each age reveals a new way that he interprets the experience. He's just now starting to kind of dig it. My manager gives him a walkie-talkie and he walks with my bodyguard on the way to the stage. He likes watching mommy.

They're scripting now and probably storyboarding. We haven't recorded anything yet. They're still in the conceptualizing stage. [I'll record] probably in the next couple of months. It's really fun; I enjoy it immensely. I love crawling out of bed with no makeup going into the studio and crawling inside of this really beautiful character.

One of the best mistakes that could have ever happened. It introduced me to a whole audience of people that had no idea who I was! It also endeared me to the audience I had 'cause they were upset about it. It was certainly a blessing in disguise.

When I was really young, [my favourite] was definitely Barbra Streisand. I really liked Olivia Newton-John when I was little. As a teenager, I started to get into Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Billie Holliday. The list evolved. I'm a huge Sara Bareilles fan. She's amazing.

Alanis is really excited to try this process. They bring you in early and they want your feedback and they bounce things off of you so I love that. I just spent a week in a rehearsal room with a bunch of amazing people [director Diane Paulus, arranger-orchestrator Tom Kitt, author Diablo Cody], so we'll see how it goes.

I never watched Game of Thrones but I got into it on the Fourth of July. I had a day free where nobody was home and I watched season one and now I have to binge-watch the rest. The violence is brutal and the women are (nude a lot)!

It's really hard to eat well and get to a gym when you're travelling. So I bought myself a Soul Cycle bike to put in my dressing room and I do that when I can. I try to get to my yoga classes when they have them [wherever I am.]
